LMDE become the news everywhere. LMDE just side project not main Mint base. Until Mint swith base to Debian testing, LMDE not for me. LMDE just beta relese. Mint software manager have bug same as in Isadora.

LMDE come with pluseaudio, Parsix is not.

Yes it is a beta and lots of things do not work correctly Fspot crashes, if you use a terminal to add compiz you will notice some compiz plugins don't compile, exaile does not compile correct etc, I do agree with the principle as I use Arch Linux, of the rolling release but to achieve stability you need to really be on the ball that's the fundamental difference in Debian and Arch one uses vanilla packages and publish work arounds, as does Gentoo, and the other uses very patched deb packages so any distro using its own base code has to patch things even more so they work. so a stable Mint Debian is going to be a lot of work for the Mint team but the potential is certainly there.

Why not just use Parsix?

Postby cmost » Sun Oct 03, 2010 12:49 am

First of all, let me just say that I've been a fan of Linux Mint for years. They really do a fabulous job of making Ubuntu Linux (of which I'm not a fan) palatable for users. That being said, I'm not sure why everyone is making a big deal out of their "new" Debian Testing based rolling release. First of all, aside from all of the aforementioned bugs and glitches, Linux Mint DE is only available in a 32 bit edition. Second, I think any Debian fan will tell you that Testing just happens to be super stable right now only because Squeeze is frozen. The moment Squeeze is released, then the floodgates will open and all of the caveats of running testing will throw a wrench into Linux Mint DE as a flood of experimental packages from Sid flood into Testing. Mint's usual newbie-ish user base will be unprepared for the problems that running Testing can often bring. Why not just use Parsix? I'm not sure why Parsix doesn't get the press that Mint or Ubuntu get but it's one of the best implementations of Debian Testing I've ever encountered. Parsix Linux has most of what Mint users have come to expect except that Parsix has been doing it a lot longer. Parsix is user-friendly, well polished, stable, and has the support of a super friendly, helpful community. Parsix developers also offer a 64 bit version. Just seems to me that this Linux Mint DE business is a lot of hoopla over something that really isn't novel, unique, or even feasible given Mint's target audience.

Long time no see
i think we both agree mint has a uphill struggle on their hands and Parsix is so stable and usually about 4 weeks behind Sid on the most important things that is some feat. You use Gentoo I use Arch they have been doing this for a long time, It took Parsix a long time to reach Ramon thats when I 1st started using Parsix and yes I still do. its installed on my sons desktop since he was 4 yrs old he is now 6 and it takes a beating from him and his many friends but it does not break. and so simple to Distro-upgrade,

Linux Mint has released their second update to the rolling LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition.) This time they've included a 64bit edition... a lot of folks have been waiting for that. Could this entice some people, especially those who became disillusioned with the *buntus and hopped distros, back into the Mint camp? I'm downloading as we speak and will be testing soon! :-)

Hi,

As a matter of interest I have been using Mint Debian rolling release since it became available. Very stable so far, but I do realise the risk of future problems as Debian progresses.

Also have Parsix 3.6r1 on another partition and this is excellent and very stable. I am impressed - this operating system is underated.

The only Parsix problem I have not been able to solve is Truecrypt install. I use Truecrypt frequently for business encryption and for me it is an important program. Mint Debian works OK with Truecrypt.

I enjoy both.

Dyfi.
