[HOWTO] Install OpenOffice.org 3.x

Postby cmost » Fri Oct 17, 2008 3:34 am

As many of you know, OpenOffice.org 3.0, the Microsoft Office 2007 compatible productivity suite, has finally been released. Demand was so great that OpenOffice.org's servers buckled under the load on the day of the release! OpenOffice is a free, open source productivity suite available for Windows, Macintosh and Linux. While OpenOffice.org 3.0 will eventually make its way into Debian's (and thus Parsix's) repositories, there's no need to wait for the advanced features and compatibility offered by this amazing office productivity suite. Here's how to install OpenOffice.org 3.x on your Parsix system today!

1. Open Synaptic package manager as root and search for Openoffice. Uninstall all files.
2. Goto this link and download the latest OpenOffice.org Linux DEB package for your desired language: http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US
3. Save the above archive to your home directory (I would choose /home/username/Downloads/OpenOffice as an example.)
4. After the archive has been download, open the directory where you saved it and right-click the file. Choose 'Extract here' to untar the archive.
5. Double click the resulting 'OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358' folder, then double-click the DEBS folder to enter it.
6. Right-click in a blank area and select 'Open in Terminal' to gain access to the command line.
7. Type the following as root (to gain root access, either type "su" followed by 'enter' and then your root credentials, or use "sudo" if you've enabled it.)
dpkg -i *.deb
8. After the packages have been installed, double-click the 'desktop-integration' folder and repeat steps 6 and 7.

That's it! You now have the latest and greatest OpenOffice.org Productivity suite installed in Parsix. Enjoy!

I think you answered your own question my friend. Go back into Synaptic and remove all traces of Openoffice.org. You're previous menu integration apparently remained and so probably conflicted with the new installation. Double check you've removed all traces of any installed openoffice.org base packages and try again.

as usual, my mistake. thanks it worked.

whats the version you have installed?

is it OOO300m9 (build: 9358)?

Is 3.0.0rc4 newer than 3.0.0, as this is what it seems to imply from openoffice torrent downloads for 64bit.

RC4 became the final version. No worries. I don't know what you think of the new version but I think it's fantastic!! Many of my old DOC files now open with perfect integrity!!
