Can't open any video files

Postby losthanzoblade » Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:56 pm

I'm still a little wet behind the ears with Linux, and new to the Debian side of Linux. (After Fedora went all Gnome3, I needed something more accessible.) I really like this Parsix distribution, but I cannot play any video files. When I try to open a video file through VLC, the screen flashes black/white lines, and then the screen freezes, and I am forced to hard shutdown.

I am using an ASUS U56-bbl6 laptop wtih Intel i5 Sandy Bridge chipset. Here is a return of lspci:

Code: Select all
hattorihanzo@buddhistpalm:~$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Sandy Bridge DRAM Controller (rev 09)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Sandy Bridge Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)

00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation Cougar Point 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 05)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation Cougar Point SMBus Controller (rev 05)
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation WiFi+WiMAX 6050 Series Gen2 (rev 67)
03:00.0 USB Controller: Device 1b21:1042
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Device 1083 (rev c0)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Have you tried changing VLC default output methods from Tools -> Preferences -> Video -> Output?

hm, or try some other players like totem and mplayer, to find out whether the problem is Parsix or vlc?
