cannot change themes or wallpapers & NM applet problems

Postby vinnie_vinodh » Mon Mar 01, 2010 11:30 am

Hello All
I'm new to Parsix and Parsix is great running like anything ..I liked it personally. But i had few problems with it..

> First I cannot change the wallpaper or themes from "APPEARANCE" after working for sometime like an hour or half..

>Secondly the major problem is that I cannot connect to internet from "NETWORK MANAGEMENT APPLET" ..
The DSL dails and displays connection failed . If dailed and get connected the connection terminates very soon..
I checked the logs and noticed this
>>>LCP terminated by peer
>>> Modem hangup

same happens when done from terminal with "pppoeconf"

PLease help its painful and frustrating ..

What type of DSL modem do you have? Why you are dialing from your computer to the DSL modem?

Well modem is UTstarcom UT300R2U.....

I use pon dsl-provider from the terminal to connect to the internet ..
Forgive me if dialin is the wrong word there.......
i've tried many number of times connecting to internet from Network Management Applet but its of no use ..
pon dsl-provider works fine but disconnects after some time ..

I'm not able to change theme or wallpaper from appearance or from change Desktop Background.
Cannot switch from GTK to Emerald from the fusion icon nor from the terminal using command emerald --replace

please help :( :x

System Config:- AMD Athlon 64 Processor
512MB DDR 1 RAM
Nvidia Geforce 6100 on board graphics
160GB HDD seagate

i'm not using Live i've installed it rather

vinodh@Joshua:~$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda11 9.9G 4.9G 4.6G 52% /
tmpfs 236M 0 236M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda12 11G 687M 9.2G 7% /home

/dev/sda6 64G 59G 5.1G 93% /media/bacup
/dev/sda1 20G 16G 3.7G 82% /media/disk

i'm really happy with Parsix in the way it works on my old PC i mean 512 Mb ,AMD Athlon64 .etc..But not being able to change themes and wallpapers is little frustrating though ...

The Nvidia graphics card is not supported by the latest drivers, and to use emerald you need compis working, also your ram is slightly on the low side. that being said. try the legacy drivers on the Nvidia site use the guide on installing Nvidia in the how to section. Hopefully
emerald should then work, but don't bet on compiz giving you all the bells and whistles, then we can look at your other problems.

So nvidia latest is not workin on parsix 3 !!!!!!!!!

Well i've installed from apt-get installed but it posed me problems and X didnt use nvidia driver( i've tried changin from nv to "nvidia" but it didnt) so i've downloaded the nvidia driver from there site and installed it and it worked and X used nvidia ............
.nvidia driver version :- 196.53

Okay i've disabled compiz and tried to change the wallpapers and themes but it doesnt work ..............

i'm very much happy with USB file transfer rate in parsix
i've used Fedora ,ubuntu and slackware nothing gave me as parsix ...a transfer rate of 20MB/s..........
while other gave me not more than 4-5 and ubuntu surprizingly 500KB/s ..............

While unable to change wallpapers and theme is little frustrating though..........

Thanks for the insight...

So Nvidia is now working.
Now to the themes I change themes and background as a matter of course to the mood I'm in at any given moment. i've just changed the theme 3 times today and the icons and the back ground, with no problem, so I don't know what to suggest on that one.
Perhaps Alan can suggest something as I can't recreate the problem on my machine.
